Bio

Anar Ali is a critically acclaimed short story writer and novelist, and newly, a screenwriter.  Her first book, BABY KHAKI’S WINGS, was a finalist for multiple awards including the Commonwealth Writer’sPrize (Best First Book). NIGHT OF POWER, her debut novel, was published in August 2019 by Penguin Random House in Canada, the US, and the Indian Subcontinent, and is forthcoming in Germany with CulturBooks Verla. Anar is a writer on the first season of the medical drama, TRANSPLANT,  from CTV/NBC which aired in February 2020 in Canada and is forthcoming in the U.S.   She is a graduate of the Canadian Film Centre Writers’ Lab, where she made two short films, (ESCAPE, DRIFT) and wrote a feature, STRONGMAN OF KAMPALA.  In 2016, she won a development deal with CBC’s Diverse Creators Program, for her 1-hour serialized dramedy, RUBY’S TURN.  She also holds a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of Calgary and a Master of Fine Arts from The University of British Columbia. Anar was born in Tanzania, grew up in Alberta, has lived in Mexico and the UK, and now makes her home in Toronto.
