Intro

Best and most surprising compliment ever? After a lengthy face to face discussion with Sidney Poitier and his assistant over food and drinks about everything from life, 3D, death, IMAX, space travel, dinosaur bones and oil, and choices and regrets, I realized it was well after midnight. I politely said goodnight so as to not overstay our welcome. He was surprised that we were leaving and not he.

As my friend and I were about to leave Sidney Poitier asked his assistant “Why don’t I ever meet young men like this?”

That was the mountaintop. When I sat down I said “I’ve waited decades to ask you a lifetime of questions, but I’m only going to ask you three.” I held up my three fingers. He clasped his hands with excitement and joyous laugher and out of those three questions, we spoke for hours, and we mostly listened. I’ll never be able to top that experience.

I really did only intend to ask him three questions.
